CALMIND PSYCHOLOGY
Couples Therapy
Throughout our lives, we all feel the need to form close relationships. This is a natural and healthy human need. Romantic relationships emerge as a result of this need. However, every relationship can encounter problems from time to time. Even in the healthiest and most successful relationships, issues that seem difficult to resolve and affect individuals' psychological well-being may arise. In such cases, couples therapy plays a crucial role and helps strengthen relationships. Sessions are usually conducted with couples, but in some cases, individual sessions can also be incorporated into the therapy process. This allows each individual to work on their own emotional and psychological challenges and contributes to a deeper understanding of relationship dynamics.
The Purpose of Couples Therapy
Couples therapy aims to address the current issues in a couple’s relationship and find solutions to these problems. The goal of therapy is to resolve conflicts between partners and rediscover the positive aspects that may have been overlooked over time. Throughout the therapy process, couples can strengthen their closeness and communication skills with each other.
The Role of the Therapist in Couples Therapy
The therapist's approach in couples therapy may vary depending on the therapeutic method used. However, in general, the therapist maintains an objective, impartial, and empathetic attitude, guiding the couple to improve their communication skills.
Key Methods Used in Couples Therapy
Different therapeutic methods offer solutions for various needs. The most commonly used approaches in couples therapy are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Gottman Method, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy.
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT focuses on recognizing and changing negative thoughts. It helps couples improve their communication skills and aims to restructure negative thought patterns. The dynamics of the relationship are worked on using techniques such as thought tracking, behavioral change, and conflict resolution.
• The Gottman Method: This approach examines the relationship through trust and emotional closeness. The primary goal is to break negative communication patterns by strengthening emotional bonds. Communication skills, positive interaction, conflict management, and assuming good intentions are methods that help the relationship develop healthily.
• Psychodynamic Therapy: The psychodynamic approach explores how individuals' past experiences and unconscious processes shape their relationships. Through attachment theory and unconscious dynamics, it helps to understand the deeper causes within the couple's relationship.
• Solution-Focused Therapy: Solution-focused therapy aims to quickly and effectively solve the couple's current problems. In this approach, the couple's strengths are highlighted, and short-term goals are set to achieve change through small steps.
