It has been observed that due to the frequent use of phrases like “I’m stressed” or “I have anxiety,” the underlying causes of these conditions are not well understood. What is anxiety? What is stress? What are their similarities and key differences?

Anxiety, in its basic sense, is considered a long-lasting response focused on a widespread threat in the future. It is not a specific threat or a short-lived reaction. Experiencing anxiety occasionally in daily life is considered a normal part of life. However, when anxiety becomes intense, excessive, and persistent, involving recurring periods of intense fear or terror that peak within minutes, it moves beyond being a part of daily life and interferes with an individual’s daily activities, becoming difficult to control. Symptoms can start in childhood or adolescence and may continue into adulthood.

Excessive worry, restlessness, tension, a sense of impending danger, panic, distress, suicidal thoughts and behaviors are included. In addition to sensory symptoms like the inability to think about anything other than the current worry, difficulty concentrating, and struggling to control anxiety, physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, fatigue, increased heart rate, and rapid breathing are present. There is also a tendency to avoid triggers, which can reduce social functionality and degrade the quality of daily life. It is possible to have multiple anxiety disorders, and no matter what the worry is, seeking support can be helpful.

Mental health is an important state of well-being that enables individuals to cope with stressors in life. It has been observed that individuals exposed to negative conditions such as poverty, violence, disability, and inequality experience higher levels of stress. From this, the primary difference between anxiety and stress can be concluded: stress is triggered by external factors, or stressors. While stress usually originates from external events, anxiety is more of an internal emotion and can persist for a long time. In short, anxiety can occur without a cause, while stress is dependent on stressors. Most individuals who go through traumatic events may have difficulty adapting and coping with stress for a short period of time, but over time, stress-related symptoms may improve on their own. These symptoms include the impact on daily life, physical symptoms becoming chronic, restlessness, disruption of sleep and eating patterns, and feeling constantly fatigued and drained. If the symptoms worsen and persist for months or years, and affect an individual’s daily functionality, it is important to seek treatment and alleviate the symptoms.

In recent years, with the increasing emphasis on mental health, the prevalence of disorders and their frequency have also risen.
